Gladiators ( Topic ):
Two teams/players must chose their champion and correctly identify vocabulary to defeat their opponent in combat. Correctly answering questions will increase the champions defence points, making it less likely that they will take damage from opponents attacks. Defence points will also decrease if the vocabulary is identified incorrectly, or too slowly! .. consecutive correct answers will increase attack points, more attack points means more attempts to hit the opponent per turn.
Jump Race ( Topic ):
Two players/teams must correctly identify vocabulary in order to jump to the next platform in a race to the finish line... Only it's not quite so straightforward.. There is a exploding barrel on each of the platforms which may or may not blow up when the player lands, causing them (and potentially the other player) to fall down to a lower platform. Chain reactions are possible. Chaos is guarenteed.
Memory Game ( Topic ):
A relaxed and simple card matching game, which can be quite challenging (especially if you have terrible short term memory, as I do) but is suitable for students of all ages. Match the picture cards with the word cards until they are all found. I recommend that you use this for a team based competition or set a time limit to find all the cards if you want to make things a bit more exciting!
Pixel Quest ( Topic ):
Two teams/players must chose their character and correctly identify vocabulary to race each other to the treasure chest! Correctly answering questions will allow the player to roll a dice which will determine how far they move... But, to make things more interesting, the path is blocked by a series of powerful enemies.. Encountering an enemy will mean that the player has to defeat them (by answering three questions correctly), Otherwise, they will be sent back to the start..
Treasure Hunt( Topic ):
Two teams must correctly answer the mummies' questions (correctly identify vocabulary) in order to get keys which can be used to unlock treasure chests. Some chests contain gems of various point values .. some contain booby traps. The team with the most points at the end is the winner. WARNING: This game contains mild horror (mummies,maniacal laughter..zombie noises).
Band of Heroes ( Topic ):
Embark on a quest through the perilous forest. Correctly identify vocabulary items to defeat waves of enemies in combat and reach the treasure at the end of the map. A game best played with three players (or three teams), although it can also be played by one player. This is a turn based, side-scroller strategy game which requires a combination of English skill and teamwork to succeed. Correctly identifying words will increase the players defense, attack and health points. Fast answers recieve greater rewards. Wrong answers will lower defense and attack points, making players weaker and more likely to take damage. This game takes longer to play than the other games here. Allocate around fifteen to twenty minutes of class time to play it.
Spelling Lab ( Topic ):
Can you survive a shift in the Spelling Lab?.. Players must correctly spell sixteen vocabulary words within a given time limit in order to maintain equilibrium and keep things running smoothly in the lab (with the help of a friendly robot). The situation in the lab progressively deteriorates with each mistake.. Too many mistakes will lead to disaster... This game may be a little stressful and scary for younger students. I recommend that you do a lot of practice with the work sheets provided on this site to make sure that the students can spell the vocabulary reasonably well before they play the game.
